Wilderness First Aid©

A hiker scouts for wild medicinals. The backcountry is filled with wonders that entice and delight wilderness travelers. However, some of these wonders include poisonous critters, tasty-looking but toxic plants and improperly treated water...any of which can quickly escalate your low-key adventure into a full-blown medical emergency.

Few people realize that a two-hour hike or ride up a well traveled mountain trail can result in a fourteen hour rescue. Nor do they realize that techniques commonly used to care for injuries in the urban or suburban environment can result in greater injury or death in the backcountry.

Wilderness medical care in any form requires wilderness training and experience.

This program covers:

  • Illness and injury treatment and prevention
  • Wilderness cardiac emergency protocols
  • Gender-specific medical emergencies
  • Poisonous plants, reptiles and spiders
  • Common medicinal plants
  • Medical "McGyverisms"
